Tea on the Terrace: August 2011

We had picked a Sunday in August as it seemed to be us highly likely that we would be able to enjoy good weather, and therefore enjoy the grounds of Stoodleigh Court. Oh dear!! We wake up to weather reports of blustery wind and heavy showers.

Tea on the terrace could be a wet affair!! We had planned this for over 12 months, with at least one postponement, so no stopping now ! We had over 60 guests due to arrive at 2pm, so it was all systems go. Many of the guests were due to bring friends and family members to view the old school and we were not going to let them down.

The team at Stoodleigh Court were great, and my opposite number at Stoodleigh Court was Leah (Event Organiser) and she had done a great job. We had access to the HM study, the main hall, dining hall and the old 5th form, which was now a bar. The bar was open and soon became very popular, with many former pupils remarking that they could not remember it being there in their day, and others fervently wishing that it had been! The great hall looked......well great! Occasional tables dressed for the event and the great fire lit, reminding many of those cold winter evenings at school. There was much memorabilia to be read and perused through, and a video of sports days throughout the mid-late 1970's was shown in the HM study.

The original vision of events, walking the grounds, playing on the lawns, and cream tea on the top terrace was gone. Many braved the weather to walk the terrace, but many chose to stay and chat with old friends and sip a sherry or a pint! At 3.30 about 25 of us paid a visit to St Margarets church in Stoodleigh. Some drove and some took the old church path down to the village. There we were able to take part in a small service, and heard a few words form Richard Mackie, himself a former pupil and subsequently headmaster.

On returning to Stoodleigh Court after a lovely service, and emotional for some, we were delighted to see that Stanley Johnson 1949-1953 (Boris Johnson's father) had arrived and was in the study. After generously signing a copy of his autobiography I had on me (that was lucky!!), he took much joy at looking at some of the old photos and other items. I must, at this point thank Giles Gallie for sending his old school blazer, cap and tie over from Canada. It brought many memories to see the old kit once again.

IT WET INSIDE! In true form, and as an echo to many days in the past, weather prevented tea on the lawn, so we had a smashing cream tea in the dining hall. Again Stoodleigh Court did us proud and the cakes and all the tea was "home made", and many agreed that it was a smashing tea!

I have included a list of those former pupils who attended the reunion that day. There may be some omissions where people booked late and for that, we apologise. Let us know if you were there and we will add you on! Sadly some could not make the event, and one such person was Michael Smart who attended the school 1934-1940, and would probably be our eldest former pupil. He was taken ill on the day, but all OK now I am happy to report.

Am I planning another reunion? Maybe not yet, but i was thinking about a London reunion, for those of you who can't find the time to come down to Devon! Look at the forum and give us your ideas. Thanks to all who came to the reunion and made it a success. Thanks to Stoodleigh Court for their patience and the excellent delivery of the event, and to Debbie Harris for her assistance in the planning and on the day.
