Hello! was created by johnnyt
My name is Johnny Thoyts and I was at Ravenswood from 1953 -58, then on to Wellington, Sandhurst, etc. I now live in Thailand. I was sad to hear that the school had closed, but managed to make a return visit with my wife a year before it did so. be good to hear from anyone from that era, but it doesn't seem that the forum gets a lot of replies. No matter, just thought I'd give it a go.

Hi there, It's good to hear from anyone with Ravenswood Connections and apologies for the fact that your posting has sat here un-responded to for a week or so.
Truth be told the Ex Ravenswoodians of more tender ages (generally but not exclusively) than us tend to frequent the Facebook Ravenswood Group but it is here on the Website where Archive material lies and you doubtless were able to see your (and indeed my) school year photos, 1953 - 1958. My 2 elder brothers remember their school years better than I, my middle - Christopher, has a remarkable memory for facts and events and not only recalls fellow pupils but often information about them.
If you wish to relate any of your time at Ravenswood - some prefer to forget that period in time! - might I encourage you to do so - if you look back in some of the older postings there is sure to be prompts that will kick start those memories!!

If, by chance, you have any archive material you wish to share, donate, or copy that you cannot see here on the website then please contact me, Richard Holladay, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

I trust you're enjoying retirement in Thailand - in my travels I never managed to get past Aden !

Richard,
Many thanks for the reply. I am afraid that I am not on Facebook - or on any other social media (except LinkedIn) for that matter - probably my loss, but my inherited military suspicious nature and reluctance to share anything remotely personal with potentially the world and his wife has rather held me back from doing so! Like I suspect many of us who hit 70, I have been looking back over my life and making a few notes. I discovered that I had remarkably little to go on apart from my memory as regards Ravenswood, although I took the odd photo when I went back some years ago before the place closed. I have to say that I enjoyed my time there enormously - and I am not just looking back through rose coloured spectacles: there was so much to do; I was a very active sportsman, I made and flew large model aeroplanes, kept rabbits, sang in the choir, enjoyed the scouts and was allowed to cut the grass at the back with the Allen Scythe in my final year! Just a few things that spring to mind! I made a lot of friends, some of whom I kept up with: Robert Tailyour, Roger Horne, Timothy Light, Peter Astin, Jeremy Moger (who became my Barclays Bank manager in Dorchester for over 20 years!) are some names I remember without looking at the school photos. But life, times and social mores move on; life at a prep' school now is not the same as it was in the 50's and I think comparisons are invidious. We have our memories, maybe we write them up; maybe the more psychiatric minded of us will try to relate them to traits of character developed later on in life, but for me I was very fond of the place, so thanks for the opportunity to see what some others felt - even if the forum is a bit dated!
Best wishes; Johnny.
